Fly casting at Centennial Park

Centennial Park was at its best on Sunday with the Rose Gardens blooming, the grass as green as and recently mowed, and Sydney putting on another perfect summers day with clear blue skies. Under these delightful conditions 18 SFR members turned up at the Willow Pond to improve their casting skills.

With the NSW Casting Championships looming it was a great opportunity for members to prac- tice landing a fly on a target and the best methods of doing this. For those not of the competition persuasion, it was a real oppor- tunity to practice those casting skills required for fishing tight rivers and streams - casting loops over the foam pole that has your line attached to it is the precursor to mending your line on the water. The trick of course is to mend on the water without actually moving your fly, but that can be practiced on the Willow Pond next month. The casting day is also a social day where members can relax over lunch and talk about what we all like to do, and that is fishing.

The club trailer with its roll out BBQ and on board Esky provided the platform for some great burghers and cold drinks, while one of the parks huge fig trees provided the shade. We had several new members attend and it is an excellent venue for them to meet other members and quickly become involved in the activities of the club.

While casting is on every month it is important that you advise you are attending prior to 12:00pm on the Saturday so lunch can be ca- tered for on the Sunday.

Coordinator of the Casting Day is Jim Gilchrist. His details are in the published events calendar and Flyrodder.
